JOURNAL OF COMPETENCES

Dear Ben,

Study in a foreign country, in this case Sweden, is undoubtedly a unique opportunity to learn about the Swedish educational system as I have seen is very different from the Spanish educational system.

But studying here is not just a good opportunity to learn about education. It is a good opportunity to meet people, other cultures, improve my English, to learn about live and especially to learn from the others.

My first day of class was something new for me. In Spain I used to go to the university where all my peers spoke the same language as me and everyone were "like me". Here in Sweden I have gone in a classroom where the 90% of the students speak another language including the teacher.

It was very shocked for me and it took several days to get used to the idea that the class was going to be in another language and I had to talk with my colleagues and the teacher in another language.

So at first it was a little bit hard since I was three years without studying English and in a short period of time I had to start to remember everything I had learned in the high school.

Analyzing the situation carefully and based on my experience, an interesting topic to discuss is how different is the way of acting and thinking of the people when they reach a foreign country where they are at disadvantage compared with the rest of the population. Since this change they can not express themselves well and they feel very lost.

Always we have to bear in mind that each person is different and we react differently to each situation, not everyone has this kind of problems so I am only talk about this people who have it and I am a good example of this.

It is often that the way we act and think is different when we faced with a problem if we compared with the way to act that we will have in their country of origin. So
when we travel we tend to lose confidence in ourselves and we are more exposed to things that affect us more than they affect in "normal situations".

To illustrate this I will discuss how different is my approach at the university in Sweden in compare with my behavior at the University of Spain.

In Spain I am more participatory, active, talkative and here I am more shine and quiet, not only at the university, interacting with other people too.
This is due to those external factors that have caused me this kind of reaction, such as the language and the fear of not understanding or say something wrong.
I would add that as I have come to know people better, I've been taking confidence, I've been improving my English, I've been losing that fear and now I feel qualified to make any kind of activities as I would do in Spain.

During this course we have carried out activities which they have contributed to the enrichment of my Erasmus. We have tried very interesting topics such as inclusion, we talked about the Declaration of Salamanca, we discussed about the difference of sex ... All these topics have been enriched to be in a Erasmus class where there were people from different countries contributing with their ideas and experiences about them.

I've loved the walks in Gavle, called walking and talking. They are very good activities that I'll take to practice with my future students.
It is amazing how one activity in which you only have to talk and walk permit us to work and learn about many different topics.

On the one hand thanks for the opportunity to be able to visit museums, cities and towns of this wonderful country with a person who lives here. Explanations and stories have not been the same if we had explained for other person. We would not have been able to learn many things.

On the other hand I do not forget the activity to read stories that we had read in our mother tongue and in English, which caused a great impact on me. Also sing songs in English, Swedish and Dutch. The dynamics we have taken in the classes have enabled us to enjoy while learning and made us feel at home.

I had not learned so much whether the role of our teacher would have been different. This is one of the things that most caught my attention, what the difference between the two educational systems are concerned. So closely the teachers work with students is something that I will never forget.

Every teacher at some point in your life have to think about what kind of teacher they want to be and after my step here in Sweden I have it clear.

Thanks for teaching me all these things.
